1946First steps were taken in regard to the new school building for Fairbury. A committee of the school board, consisting of Leo F. Quinn, Virgil A. Marshall, Harry M. Stearns and Dr. E.B. Ackerman, with Superintendent, W.E. Scott, visited other schools and consulted with architects.Duane Brown re-opened the White Castle cafe north of the post office.Petitions were presented by the employees of the Light and Water Dept., Fire Dept., Street and Alley Dept. and the Police Dept. asking to participate in the Nebraska Municipal Retirement fund.1956A large and cleverly decorated cake was presented to the Kiwanis Klown band by Mrs. Scott Miller and Max Logan of Diller. It was presented in appreciation of certificates of honorary life memberships in the band recently given Mrs. Miller and Logan, and for the service rendered by the band at Diller Homecoming picnics.Henry Hansmire was elected president of the Rotary club. I.G. Randall was elected vice president, and Chester Bonsall was elected treasurer for the 25th time.The City of Fairbury was to receive an old Union Pacific coal-burning engine to be placed in the city park. The cost of moving the engine from the tracks to the park and a concrete base were to be provided by the Kiwanis Club.1966Glenn Powell, carrier on the Powell rural mail route, was transferred to Fairbury to carry Route 1. This change followed the retirement of Russel Shoebotham, carrier on Route 4. The regular star route was to be continued to serve the Powell post office box patrons.Miss Carol Shamburg, Fairbury high school senior, was the first entrant in the 1966 Miss Fairbury scholarship pageant. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Shamburg, and she planned to sing for her talent presentation.Oil-gas prospect drilling was underway west of Endicott, with high hopes for a low-level discovery of oil or gas, four miles south and two east of Fairbury. This was the first prospecting in the county since 1957 when drilling failed to find mineral wealth.Filings for government office included Robert V. Denney, Fairbury attorney, for Congress from the First district; Charles Thone, Lincoln attorney, for lieutenant governor, and Norbert Tiemann and Val Peterson for governor.1975Don Searcy, executive director of the Nebraska American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, was guest speaker at the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce membership meeting.Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Pioneer Shrine Club of Fairbury and Hebron and Republican Valley Shrine club held a joint dinner and dance at Hebron.The Jefferson county Young Farmers Education association conducted an animal health clinic at the 4-H building at the fairgrounds.Beth Birnstihl of Lincoln was appointed district Extension home economics supervisor for southeast Nebraska. She had served as an area Extension home agent for Jefferson, Saline and Seward counties.Lois Engelman, junior in the Diller Community high school and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Engelman, was selected as an alto singer with the Young Nebraskans.1976Layton Hein retired after 25 years of service as a Fairbury City Engineer.Four Diller residents met with Congressman Charles Throne in Washington D.C. While attending a Farm Bureau meeting. They were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Logan Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Duis.1984Jerry J. Knispel, former executive vice-president of Fairbury's First National Bank, was named president of the bank.Gene Fadness, past news editor of Lincoln Sun Newspapers, became the editor of The Fairbury Journal-News.1994Fairbury farmer Ralph Knobel officially launched his bid for the GOP nomination for governor of the state of Nebraska.Fairbury Mayor Lewis mason proclaimed March Youth Art Month.
