1951Jansen school district decided to discontinue Grades 9 and 10.The new Safeway building on C Street between Sixth and Seventh was completed. It is occupied by Jack and Jill.Officers-elect of General Squires Post No. 3113, Veterans of Foreign Wars, were Calvin Pickard, succeeding Melvin Moss as commander; Fred McMurphy, Ray Allen, Stephen Decker and George Galbraith.1961Allen Hartley was director of 62-voice Fairbury Junior College chorus, which was on spring concert tour. Accompanists were Becky Traum of Fairbury and Nancy Kohl of Hardy.The Jansen American Legion post presented a check for $500 for funds for a nursing home to be built in connection with the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital. Mrs.Helen Sims was Fairbury's "salesperson of the month" in an activity sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. She was a checker at the Safeway store.1971Endicott Clay won the YMCA-City Basketball League title. Squad members were Tom Barth, Doug Donsheski, Frank Falloon, Jerry Flower, Tim Michols, Tom Roode, Chuck Schlictman and Don Thomsen.1972Doug Shultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shultz of Fairbury, was named by the Fairbury American Legion Post No. 24 as their representative to Cornhusker Boys' State.Beth Wrigley and Lyle Schellhorn won top awards in the senior division of the county timely topics 4-H speaking con-test. They were named Jefferson county representatives in the district 4-H public speaking contest.Fairbury Rotarians heard Larry Starr of Crete, one of a group of Nebraska young business and professional men who told his observations during a six weeks' stay in Chile whose trip was co-sponsored by Rotary District No. 565 of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa and the Rotary district whose clubs are in Chile.1981The new Fairbury Concert Association scheduled three concerts for 1981-82. Tri County boys and girls combined scores for the Red Grovert Relays meet. Lisa Koenig and Todd Knobel won the Fairbury Elks' most valu-able awards for scholarship-leadership.1984Fairbury's Lori Claeys, Jenny Horky and David Ward were named to the Central Conference East Division all-star team, as voted by the division coaches. Angie Oswald, Kevin Broman and Todd Stanton were given honorable mention in their respective all-star lists.1991The county department of roads was expected to start work on a new bridge two and one half miles south and one quarter mile east of Endicott, replacing an old wooden structure.2000The retirement of Jim Cabrera, a teacher who had taught in the Fairbury school system since the 1970's and who instructed wood and drafting, created a firestorm when it was learned he might not be replaced. Due to cuts in state aid, the District 8 School Board was considering not replacing him. More than 200 people attended a special meeting. The sole agenda item was to receive testimony from people who did not want to see vocational programs cut.
