1963Storms swept the Alexandria Daykin-Gladstone area and damaged numerous farm buildings. A lightning bolt killed a farmer living about four miles east of Daykin while he was after his cows in the pasture. A series of small twisters were part of the storm. The Red Cross served a lunch for volunteers who came from other neighborhoods to aid with the clean-up.1974Pam Knigge of Fairbury was announced as queen of the 1974 rodeo at the final of the event's three shows, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Knigge. First runner up was Patti McCord of rural Fairbury and second runner up was Kris Falck of Alexandria.1983Interest rates on bank certificates of deposit included 9.56 percent on 182-day, 9.13 percent on 9-day and 9.90 percent on 30-month.C&F Roofing took the Blue River Pony League baseball championship over Geneva. Fairbury First National Bank topped Superior for third. John Roeser, Coach Tim Meacham's pitching ace, had a 7-0 mark in C&F's 31-2 record. Leading hitters included Tony Biehl, Chris Mannschreck, Jon Loetterle and Mike Dunekacke.Fairbury's Board of Public Works approved a basic monthly water rate increase from $3 to $3.40.1993The re-release of Walt Disney's “Snow White” was playing at the Bonham Theatre.The Fairbury City council voted to implement a plan calling for the construction of a trash transfer station. The station was tentatively set to be constructed on the existing landfill, site in lieu of a city owned landfill.Vernetta Thorp, who opened her new business at 508 Sixth St., furnished the shop with seven toning tables and a stationary bicycle which could give you a toning workout in an hour or less.2003A food drive conducted by the First Baptist Church Vacation Bible School participants raised over 400 pounds of food for the Blue Valley Community Action Food Pantry.Temperatures ranged from three degrees below in the northeast to five degrees above normals in the Panhandle. Precipitation was scattered across the state with amounts mostly less than half an inch.2006Progressive Agricultural Safety Day was held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, sponsored by the Jefferson County Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and the UNL extension office in Jefferson County. 145 attended the activities.
