1883A creamery was started at Alexandria, a town little more than 10 years old.Featuring the livestock exhibits at the eighth annual Jefferson County Fair were 16 Poland China and two Chester White hogs by H.C. Dawson.1893Pastures were drying up and late corn yields cut by dry weather. Many farmers sold grain stocks they had on hand when prices jumped by 20 cents a bushel.The Jefferson County Bank of Daykin advertised that it had been the first in the area to resume loans, after the nationwide money panic.1903The Rev. R.N. Orrill was assigned to the Fairbury Methodist pastorate. Former pastor, Dr. Balch, was appointed at Pawnee City. The Rev. Orrill later served six years as district superintendent, with headquarters here.An electrical system was being planned at Plymouth, with several new homes included as customers.1913Fifty acres of “poor land” on the County Farm had produced $690 worth of alfalfa hay and $105 in seed, reported W.H. Clark, farm superintendent.Under a new law, Jefferson County's first mother's pension was issued.Dickenson Bros. & Hanford's Good Clothes Shop, on the north side of the square, offered new fall units from $12.50 to $25 each, shirts $1 to $2.50 and hats $1.50 to $5.The new Farmers & Merchants Bank building was to be extended west four feet to the alley, to be occupied by the Fairbury Plumbing & Heating Co.1922Local organizations provided five floats in a historical parade at the county fair.Prairie hay was a big group in that “Dry Three Year.” Most yields were about 1 ½ tons per acre, with the $10 per ton baled netting 7.50 per acre.1933The Fairbury Axis Club (later Business & Professional Women) sponsored a successful flower show.No local tax funds were involved in the Jefferson County Fair, with individuals and organizations volunteering.About 100 individuals spent a day on a booster trip to towns throughout the area.1943War Savings Bond pur-chasers received tickets to a special show at the Bonham Theater.1953Mrs. Ida Pritchett. 97. of Boulder. Bailey of Fairbury as senior vice commander.Mrs. Paul Ude was named Nebraska department soloist.1973Fairbury Jaycees and Jayceettes were sponsors of the Fairbury Youth Center, opening in its new location on the south side of the square.“First frost” of the season had been September 18 though the official Weather Service thermometer registered 34 degrees.William J. Fiance was appointed Jefferson County attorney, succeeding Ronald Brackle, who had resigned. Panes had served as county judge from March 1965 to March 1970.Tim Fairley's Guernsey herd was tops at the state fair. Ellen Zabel received a purple ribbon in 4-11 fashion modeling.Dennis C. Wood, former Fairbury police officer, was named a deputy by Sheriff Clyde Kellie. Other deputies were Donovan Criner, Joe Roskilly and Rex Southwick. Ambulance employees were Jim Kellie and Don Trimm.1983Extension by the Fairbury Utilities Department of a primary line serving Gilead and surrounding area was halted temporarily by denial of a waiver by Norris Public Power District.Voters of School District No. 8 rejected a $4.25 million bond issue to finance a new junior-senior high school building, 1,801-678. It trailed at all polling places in Fairbury and in rural parts of the district.Meridian Volleybelles beat top-seeded Filley to take the MUDECAS Class 13 Volleyball championship. Team leaders included Missi Zotibek, Lynn Henkel, Staci Zoubek and Stephanie Crays.1993Repairs on the district courtroom at the Jefferson County Courthouse were almost finished.Two local athletes, Ben Alderman of Fairbury and Jon Morgan of Diller, were being looked to for leadership and experience as seniors on the Doane college football team.George and Minnie Meyerhoff of rural Diller were crowned Germanfest King and Queen. Prince and Princess were Brett Greenwood and Krista Niederklein.Pamela Kugel-Rolls, Fairbury Public Schools art instructor, had five national award-winning student artists at Jefferson Intermediate School. They were Ryan Hynek, Caleb Meyer, Jordan Haag, Justin Haag and Jenna Austin.Three Jefferson County women were named recipients of scholarships sponsored by alumnus Dr. Bill Edwards of Baldwin City. Kansas, to attend Southeast Community College. Beatrice Recipients were Teresa Houser and Colleen Schroeder, both of Fairbury, and Charlotte Compton Jurgena of Endicott.
