Makena Schramm Earns Triple Crown

It’s a milestone to become a state champion, or even a national champion. To go through a different style of wrestling and have the same level of success that one is used to would be a daunting task in and of itself.Makena Schramm was able to do that and more as she was a recipient from Nebraska USA Wrestling as a Triple Crown winner.The Triple Crown Award is given to wrestlers who won their Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco State tournament in the same year.With little exposure, yet able to adapt with the best of them Schramm was ready and willing to take on the challenges.What has been a roller-coaster of a year, Makena will be off to Midland University with a scholarship to wrestle, and in this same year she was able to accomplish many feats in putting the finishing touches to a high school wrestling career that will not be soon forgotten.If someone was to ask her about this year and all that she’s done, its been a journey she’s taken one day at a time though it all seems to be flying by, “It’s an honor to win the award. This whole year has gone by so fast, for the longest time my main focus was becoming a state champion.“With that being my biggest focus, the rest of the year was done before I could reflect on everything I had done. I got to sign with Midland and knew I was going to be able to wrestle after high school was done, but I didn’t want to be done without having that state title for our girl’s program and the school.”“I take pride in the fact that for our school there’s only two undefeated wrestlers to be state champions and I can say I’m one of them, I think it shows girls who might want to be a wrestler that it is possible. I think it speaks on the work I put into get to that point, and that even the day after winning that when I finally got home I was working out to get ready for the tournaments that were coming up because I knew I was going into different styles which I wasn’t to experienced with at that point. So just getting myself ready was something I knew I needed to do if I was going to get ready for it in time.”From the results of the summer it’s safe to say that she was prepared for every tournament, and in defeat was able to learn more for the better as her experience in the other styles started to grow, “Honestly I’ve thought that Folkstyle, and Greco are pretty close into being my favorites. Greco has been fun because it’s mainly been throws, I’ve got the experience with Folkstyle, yet Freestyle has been an adjustment because of the certain rules that come into play with scoring.“I’ve had to learn how to protect my back more than I’ve been use to which has been a learning curve on its own, but after enough time I think I’ve got a better feel for it. Even when I’ve lost, I learned so much from those matches and I know I’ve got so much more work to do and that’s honestly been a fun part of the whole summer.“Seeing the different levels of experience in those different styles and actions it’s going to take to be successful. I like a challenge and I feel that what I’ve learned from these tournaments over the summer will greatly help me in the future with what’s to come and I’m excited for what’s next.”
