Man Takes Speeding Ticket to Trial and Ends Up Under Arrest

A Fairbury man went to court to fight a speeding ticket. When court was over, he found himself under arrest for an unrelated warrant on a weapon charge.The offense of speeding is punishable by a fine and can often be paid online, so that the defendant does not need to appear in court. However, Cameron D. May, age 54, chose to take the case to trial. He was charged with driving 53 mph (miles-per-hour) in a 35 mph zone, alleged to have occurred on June 19 of this year. The fine is $125.TrialJefferson County Attorney Joseph Casson called just one witness, the deputy that issued the ticket.May was not represented by an attorney. On cross-examination, May asked the deputy the location of his vehicle when radar clocked May's vehicle at 53 mph.The deputy indicated this was on Highway 136, in the 35 mph zone, but May disagreed. May said, “No, I don't think you were. I think you were on the 45 section.”May asked no follow-up questions and called no witnesses. He asked the judge for permission to bring his cell phone into the court room, as that is where he said he had his evidence. However, May did not present any of that evidence. He also chose not to testify, although he did say to the judge, “I thought we had the right to travel freely in this country. And I've been looking that up and I found out, I'm right.”Judge Bauer responded, “I guess I don't know what you're referring to with respect to a speeding charge. We're here on a limited scope as far as the speeding charge is concerned.”The defendant offered no other argument and was found guilty. He was fined $125 plus $49 in court costs. The defendant requested four months to pay his fine and costs, which was granted by the judge.ArrestAfter court was adjourned, but before he could leave the courtroom, May was stopped by Jefferson County Sheriff Nick Georgi and deputies, who informed May that there was a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody at that time.The warrant was issued Thursday, November 30, 2023.On November 15, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received a call from an individual who reported May is a convicted felon and in possession of firearms. Felons are not entitled to possess firearms in Nebraska.According to the Affidavit for Arrest Warrant, the reporting party sent photos in which four different firearms were identified: a Glock 48, a 45 caliber 1911, a 12-gauge pump shotgun, and an AR-15 style rifle.
