Mayor Issues Burn Ban As Fire Danger Continues

Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown issued a burn ban on Monday, April 25, 2022, “Effective immediately, all campfires or burning of any kind is prohibited at the Crystal Springs Park and Campground. This ban is being issued at the request of our local volunteer fire departments due to high fire danger. The fire ban will remain in effect until further notice.”That same day, the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District also issued a burn ban.Jefferson County and much of the rest of Nebraska has seen a series of fires, both small and large, either caused by or exacerbated by dry conditions and high winds.Among those is a massive fire along 702 Road, which includes Red Willow, Furnas and Frontier Counties in Nebraska and Phillips and Norton Counties in Kansas. The fire began on Friday, April 22 and has so far burned well over 41,000 acres in both Kansas and Nebraska.On Thursday, April 2, the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team One reported 88 percent containment.The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency reported, “Additional resources have arrived from several surrounding states to assist with suppression efforts on the Road 702 Fire. The arrival of these resources has allowed firefighters from local volunteer departments to get some rest and reset with family after what has already been several weeks high fire activity. Incident Management would like to acknowledge the great work that was done by first responders. It is gearing up to be a very busy fire season, and we are honored to be able to assist the local departments.”
