Memories of Linda

-Editor's note:Linda Beermann passed away on November 25 of this year. To many Nebraska journalists, she was best known as the wife of Allen Beermann, the one-time head of the Nebraska Press Association. However, she was an important journalist in her own right as a groundbreaking television weather reporter and newscaster.Of course, people are not just their jobs, a thing we sometimes forget. That is why we are publishing some memories from her niece, Michele Beermann Hafey. By Michele Beermann HafeyMy favorite aunt, Linda Beermann, passed away Friday. My heart hurts at the thought of never seeing her again (in this realm anyway). But she's finally free of an aging body that limited her ability to live as she once did. She was the wife of a politician, Nebraska's Secretary of State. The spotlight was always on him, but she shown brightly without it.She lived in Lincoln, where I went to college. And she took me to lunch every month, for five years, to a place called Grandmother's. A cheese frenchee for me, a taco salad for her…and of course, a bite of my peanut butter pie. She was my touchstone, guiding me as I navigated life on my own for the first time. Her wisdom and humor filled me up…the emotional nourishment I needed. One of the few people that made me feel seen. She offered to do my laundry during finals, and made me a bunny cake every year before Easter break…chocolate, because she knew I didn't like coconut. Once, after visiting her, my mom found strawberry bowls in her suitcase…the same ones she had admired when they went shopping. That was Linda. I loved her beautiful handwriting and how she called me “Chele.” She moved through the world with style and grace, emanating a quiet strength.I hope she knew how much I loved her and how grateful I am to have known her.
