Moving Ahead

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has now unionized.A law enforcement union is a pretty common occurrence.So delving into this, the county can ask questions of other county officials that deal with negotiations and living day-to-day life with a union. Jefferson County already deals with unions in other aspects of county services.I have seen unions be divisive and also bring people together. People want to make sure their vision is carried out properly. This can sometimes be contentious and lead to hard feelings. This can also lead to a harmonious life within a department.An advantage we have in Jefferson County is that many of the deputies have strong ties to the community. These are hometown folks with deep roots in the county. So it may appear that a union is only needed to provide a fair standard of living for the deputies. However, the case can be made that deputies have had a fair standard of living here for years without a union.This may be the way things are going into the future with unions guaranteeing rights, protections and salaries.No matter the case, I have faith that this new union will not deter the deputies from carrying out their job on a daily basis.The first thing we need to concentrate on is ridding the community of drugs. The local program of ridding the area of run-down houses is working, which now means working closely with other agencies to go after the heart of the issue and get the manufacturers.They say cut the head off of the snake, the body will die, meaning if you get the heads of the drug rings, the minor players will go away.Let’s get rid of them all.
