Nebraska Officials React To Attempted Assassination Of Donald Trump

Much of he country is till reeling from the attempted shooting of former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday, July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI is investigating the matter as an assassination attempt.The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, age 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was killed at the scene. One campaign rally attendee was also left dead and another injured.The incident has brought universal and bipartisan condemnation of political violence, including from a number of Nebraska elected officials. Jefferson County Commissioners Mark Schoenrock, Gale Pohlmann and Michael Dux issued a joint statement, “Our thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and his family. We are grateful he survived this act of terrible political violence. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who were exercising their constitutional rights and lost their life or were seriously injured and their families. Although we may have varying political views, we must remember we are united as Americans, and have meaningful and respectful dialogue. We are privileged to live in the greatest country in freedom, bought and paid for by American patriots. There is far more that unites us than divides us. Political violence is never acceptable and is never the answer.” Governor Jim Pillen issued a statement shortly after the shooting, “This was a terrible incident and a shocking moment for our democracy. Suzanne and I are gratified that President Trump is reported to be okay, but we are deeply saddened to hear that one attendee was killed and at least one other has been injured. This type of politically motivated violence is to be condemned, no matter what form or what situation. I commend the President for his immediate display of strength following the attempted assassination and I hope that he will soon be back in front of the American people. I call on all Nebraskans to offer their prayers for those impacted by today’s events and for our collective peace as a Nation.” U.S. Senator Deb Fischer also issues a statement that same day, “Bruce and I are thankful that President Trump has survived this assassination attempt, and we’re praying for the families with loved ones lost and in critical condition. The decisive actions of law enforcement on the scene no doubt prevented further loss of life, and we’re grateful for their bravery.”U.S. Representative Adrian Smith posted in X (formerly known as Twitter), “Violence has no place in our nation’s political life, and this attack marks a sobering day for our country.”U.S. Senator and former Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts sent a letter to Kimberly Cheatle, Director of the U.S. Secret Service, and Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, “This cowardly attempt on President Trump’s life and subsequent death and injuries to American citizens prompts a thorough review of the safety measures and procedures that were in place in the days leading up to this attack and the response immediately following. Transparency brings accountability.”The letter asked five questions: Was either the Secret Service or the Department of Homeland Security notified of any threats at the event prior? Did anyone with the Secret Service raise concerns prior to this event with the building in which the shooter was located? Did any member of the secret service or any other law enforcement member request permission to engage the shooter? Were any such requests denied? There have been reports that law enforcement was notified that there was an unauthorized person on the roof of an adjacent building prior to any shots being fired. Is this true? Will you commit to doing a full investigation into this assassination attempt and make those findings public immediately?A number of high-profile Nebraska Democrats have joined their Republican colleagues in condemning both the actions of the shooter and political violence in general.Jane Keeb, Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, issued the following statement, “The Nebraska Democratic Party condemns all political violence. We are grateful to the Secret Service and law enforcement for protecting former President Trump and getting him to safety. We hope all rally-goers are on their way home to their loved ones.”Preston Love Jr., candidate for U.S. Senate in Nebraska, also issued a statement, “I am aware of the shooting incident at former President Trump’s rally this afternoon. Violence in our country is never the answer. Whether in the streets or against our leaders, it is simply unacceptable. I urge everyone to stand against violence as we work towards a better future for our nation. I wish the former president Trump a speedy recovery.”State Senator Tony Vargas, who is currently running for Congress, posted on X, “There is no place for violence in our politics and I strongly condemn all acts of violence against anyone, regardless of their political party. I am glad to hear that President Trump is ok and thank our law enforcement for their quick action.”
