New Role Created To Ensure Compliance With ADA And Civil Rights Regulations

By Theodore BallA proposal creating a new position to ensure compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VI (Civil Rights Act of 1964) was presented at the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 28. Jefferson County Attorney Joseph Casson will be filling the role of ADA and Title VI Coordinator for the county. “The county is going to have some additional reporting requirements because of the large amount of federal aid that we're receiving for our federal funded projects for roads,” said county commissioner Mark Schoenrock. “We have additional responsibilities to track things.”The primary source of those federal funds are grants for major road projects. The last time the Federal Government required an update of the ADA regulations in Jefferson County was in 2013. More than a decade later, ADA’s scope for updates has widened, expanding its reach to more county facilities within Jefferson County.“When we last updated our plan in 2013, what we looked at was the courthouse. What I'm looking at, or seeing is, we kind of have to go beyond the courthouse because any county facilities we have to look at,” said Casson. The proposed position oversees monitoring the county’s compliance with the related Federal and State regulations. The job includes preparing reports and presenting project status reports to the County Board of Commissioners, updating and maintaining the database of projects and complaints received regarding county facilities, the facility renovation budget coordinating renovation projects annually, and the organization of regular staff training on ADA and Title VI requirements.The term for the ADA and Title VI coordinator will be one year starting June 1st, 2024, and ending on May 31st, 2025. The position will be paid $40 an hour via a prepaid professional service contract, claims will be submitted monthly. The hours for the position have yet to be set because it is not yet known how much work will be involved.
