New Softball Coach Hosts Clinic

A new beginning for a new Jeffs softball coach as Marisa Garver will be taking the helm coming in July officially and on Sunday, April 24 held a softball clinic as an introductory course with the potential softball future players with a great turnout and attitude towards the future.Before that she had given some insight on her background on how this came about recalling that, “I played at Northeast High School as a pitcher and first-basemen, went to Nebraska Wesleyan where I was mainly a pitcher and played a little bit of first base, and after graduation became an assistant coach and was there for three years.”In 2017 she became the JV coach at Lincoln Northeast High School, and then was at Lincoln Northstar for a year as a volunteer coach and for the last two years has been an assistant/pitching coach for Norris.When asked about what qualities and attributes Garver was looking to find or have instilled to find success was spoken on as she said, “I’m looking for confidence, hard-work, and communication” and would elaborate further on the communication aspect by saying, “There’s a lot of different aspects of communication in softball that could be between, players and the coach, the coach and the parents knowing and understanding what the program is working towards, and as with players on the field in the games knowing what’s going on and what’s supposed to be done.”What it all boils down to for Garver seemed to be that, “For any and every game showing that here at Fairbury we will have a presence and were not going to shy away from any opponent.”True as it is for confidence in an athletes ability to execute the things that have been practiced time and time again is vital as Garver has proved that as she has had the confidence on display before as she completed her playing career in 2016 as a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher for the Prairie Wolves.She was named 2nd-Team All-GPAC as a senior in 2016, the second straight season she earned that recognition. As the NWU No. 1 pitcher, Garver went 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA in 30 appearances in 2016 ranking fifth in the GPAC in ERA and sixth in wins. She ended her career with her name on 12 different NWU all-time pitching charts and was named the AD3I All-Independent Pitcher of the Year in both 2015 and 2016.
