New Staff, Roof Repairs, Pre-School Topics At FPS Meeting

Some personnel changes took place at the Fairbury Public Schools board meeting Monday evening, October 13, 2025.The board accepted the resignation of Tate Harvey and immediately hired his replacement, Emily Burke, as the new physical education teacher for Central Elementary. Also at the meeting, it was reported that during parent/teacherconferences a pre-school survey will be conducted to check into the validity of all day pre-school options.“During parent, teacher conferences, we are doing a parent survey on a full day pre-school program,” Kim Roberts, Central Elementary Principal, said. “We are exploring the idea and seeing if we can offer a section of all day pre-school and a teacher doing two sections of three-year-olds.”Roberts explained the reasoning for the exploration of the idea is two-fold: “Keep our numbers high and also give that opportunity to meet parent needs because of constant daycare issues and half days can cause issues. Plus, we are seeing some of those effects on our kindergartners not being quite ready entering kindergarten, expectations are higher and whatnot.”In preparation for roof repairs to the ’47 Building, Fairbury’s School Board is getting their ducks in a row for that process. At the October school board meeting, school board member Neil Lucking explained two proposals for engineering the roof were received.“There is quite a bit of difference in price, but also in what they are doing with it, too, and stuff,” Lucking said. “We didn’t really put a RFP (Request For Proposal) together, we just kind of said we want you to engineer the roof and one came out with more services than the other one in terms of maybe a little more construction management.”Chris Goeking, Maintenance Director for FPS, said one of the bidders brought up some questions which prompted him to examine the situation to get a true ‘apples to apples’ view before the November meeting. The board will address the situation again at the November meeting.
