No More Stray Cat Strut

The Beatrice Humane Society (BHS) is planning a one day spay and neuter event in Wymore. This event will be held Saturday, June 21, 2025, and is open to residents of Blue Springs and Wymore who need help managing outdoor cat populations.Wymore and Blue Springs have struggled with cat overpopulation for more than 10 years. BHS estimates that there are 550 cats and kittens that are unaltered in Wymore and Blue Springs. BHS emphasizes this is only an estimate. However based off of the number of surrenders and stray intakes from these two comparatively small communities in Gage County, they also account for nearly the same number of intakes of cats and kittens as Beatrice.The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Wymore City Council on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. According to the BHS proposal, “We plan to spay and neuter 150 cats and kittens, all friendly or young kittens will be transferred to BHS/our rescue partners and placed indoors.”“We have secured tentative volunteer commitments from four veterinarians, a dozen veterinary technicians and at least a dozen volunteers from outside of Wymore to help make this happen,” noted BHS.BHS have found funding or volunteer commitments for all but approximately $5,000 of the estimated costs of putting on this event. BHS said, “As much of this planning so far has focused on resources outside of Wymore and Blue Springs we are returning to the communities to ask for assistance in finding commitments for these items to be able to solidify the project and push it forward.” Lodging before the event: Three rooms for two nights before the event for the trapping team and additional five rooms the night before the event for our medical teams. Food for the volunteers during the event: Estimate 20 staff and volunteers, breakfast and lunch. Additional Volunteers: About 10-20 local volunteers are needed to help with check in, paperwork, moving cats around, cleaning, and discharging/returning cats the day of the event. No real experience is required, just a willingness to help the community get the cat population under control. A suitable location: Ideally somewhere with easily cleanable floors and at least semi climate controlled. While this is earlier in the summer, it will likely still get pretty warm. Per BHS, “This could be a gym, or a large workshop, maybe a car shop or a fire station type building. Ideally bigger than a basketball court, but could be pretty flexible with different rooms and setups.” Funding: As note above, an additional $5,000 shy of our total event costs. BHS hase had some small villages contribute to TVNR (Table Rock in Pawnee County, and Dewitt in Saline County). A village contribution could also assist in closing this funding gap. If we can find lodging options and food donations for the volunteers this funding gap comes down a little more. We are also looking for functioning/secure cat and raccoon sized live traps that can be loaned to BHS for this one time event (or donated!).Day of Donation Wishlist: This is a list of items that can be sourced/donated by individuals and local businesses without much cost but will help keep costs for the event a little lower: Trash Bags Masking Tape Sharpie Markers Puppy Pee Pads Cheap toothbrushes Printing Paper Cases of water/soda/Gatorade Exam Gloves Flat sheets Snacks cans of cat food, tuna and sardines Paper Towels Blue Huck Towels Long Extension CordsBHS will be posting a volunteer list closer to the date. They will need trappers and door knockers before the event to talk to people in the community and then volunteers on the day of the event.
