Observations from 1935

The best way to keep a bee is to keep away from it and buy your honey.…The safest bank we can think of would be one in a dry climate, where all the folks save their money for a rainy day.…A good deal of this relief money is burned up for cigarettes when a pipe would do just as well. But so far, we haven't found any relief money being spent playing golf.…When the editor of this paper measured the rainfall in his rain can last week, he found nearly two inches when it actually had rained considerably less than an inch. Someone had poured a little water in the can before the rain which made it easy to report a big gully washer when we really had a very moderate shower. That's the way with these cure-the-depression schemes; they make more water but no more rain. They make big figures but the crops continue to dry up. It's easy to make more rain in the rain-can but making more on the dry ground is something else. It is easy to make more money but hard to make more wealth.…They had an animal picture at the Bonham Theatre last week where a girl made a playmate of a wildcat. Finally, the wildcat grew big and wandered off in the woods and the girl was so lonesome she had to have some excitement, so she got married.…Having destroyed the surplus, flooded the country with booze, raised taxes and abolished the depression, the President is now giving the people fireside talks telling how he is going to spend that $51 billion of relief money borrowed from our grandchildren.…With seven inches of rain near Hastings and none at Gladstone, will someone please explain about that dry moon and the weather predictions in the almanac.…What a climate where farmers whose wheat is burning up with drouth have to drive four miles out of their way to get across the flooded Blue River. And when it rains seven inches one place and fifty miles away the drouth still continues, it must make the county agents wrinkle their brows whether to start a campaign to abate the dust or stop the floods.…We are all keyed up to learn which farmer is going to win in that pasture contest but we are betting on the one who got the most rain.…Doctors say now that many crazy people can be cured by giving them a high fever. If they want plenty of material to practice on, we recommend congress.…The urge to get something for nothing does not seem to make some people go out in the back yard and pick their greens when it is easier to buy spinach at the store.
