Recall Effort Against Gage County Attorney Falls Short

By Gordon HopkinsThe date of Thursday, May 9, 2024, was the deadline for a petition to recall Gage County Attorney Roger Harris. Wymore resident Kerri Barnard Jones was the driving force behind the recall effort. She confirmed to FJN that she did not collect enough signatures, “Unfortunately, we came up short.”A minimum of 2,275 was needed for the recall to go forward.Jones said, “Although the numbers that we turned in don’t win the recall, the number of people that we talked to that wanted to but were scared did win the recall as far as we are concerned.” Among the controversies during Harris’ tenure as county attorney, he has faced public criticism for not filing criminal charges against veterinarian Dr. Jennafer Glaesemann, who had been accused of neglecting horses at her veterinary clinics in Beatrice and Pickrell, where 17 horses died.Harris said he doubted he could prove a case against Dr. Glaesemann beyond a reasonable doubt, in part due to the presence of parvovirus, which had been detected in some of the horses. Jones cited Harris’ failure to charge Dr. Glaesemann as one reason for the recall but emphasized that was not the only reason. Jones told FJN, “Maybe the most challenging part of this was talking to the people and hearing the multitude of additional stories of Roger Harris not operating in the best interests of our community and the victims in our community in his current role. We were reminded each day of why this recall was necessary.”
