Rolla Caroline Heller

Rolla Caroline Heller of Fairbury, daughter of Herman Heller and Dorothea (Voderstrasse) Heller was born May 31, 1934 on the Heller family farm southwest of Gilead, Nebraska. She departed this life at Gardenside Nursing Home in Fairbury on August 23, 2024 at the age of 90 years old.Rolla was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, by Rev. R.J. Voss in Gilead, Nebraska on June 17, 1934, and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on May 16, 1948, by Rev. Al Heine. Rolla attended District 97 in Thayer County through 8th grade. She attended Reynolds High School from 1948-1952 graduating May 15, 1952. Rolla attended Fairbury Junior College for the summer session earning at teacher’s certificate. She taught one year at District 97 in Thayer County from 1952-1953. She then went back to summer school to earn enough credits to teach at the Gilead Public School from 1953-1954. That was enough teaching school so she went back to Fairbury Junior College for the fall semester and graduated in May 1955. Rolla started working at City Investment Company in Fairbury in January 1956. She worked there until the end of November 1968. She moved to Lincoln in December 1968 and started working for First National Bank in Lincoln thru April 1980. In 1980 the bank hired EDS to operate the computer department where she worked until October 1990. In the late 1980’s First National Bank and Omaha National Bank merged becoming Firstier Bank. Around 1990 the EDS contract expired and she went to work for Firstier Bank until March 1996. She decided to retire after the bank had been sold once again. After a short break she started working at Union Bank in October 1998. She retired once again May of 2000. In October 2013 Rolla moved to Fairbury and lived at Fairbury Gardens until May of 2024. Rolla was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gilead. She taught Sunday school for ten years at St. Paul. She attended Sheridan Lutheran Church while living in Lincoln. Rolla belonged to the WELCA at both churches and attended bible studies. As a member of the WELCA she was privileged to attend four national conventions. Rolla belonged to an Extension Club while living in Lincoln. After retirement, she read about the Linus Project to crochet afghans for various places. She crocheted for many years, after making 100 she quit counting. Rolla is preceded in death by her parents, brother Reuben, and infant sister Lucille.She is survived by brother Roger Heller of Gilead, and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10: 00 am on August 28, 2024 at St. PaulLutheran Church in Gilead, Nebraska, with the Rev. Keith Brozek.
