Rotary Recognizes Community Leaders

Mick Suey was recognized by the Fairbury Rotary Club for the service he is doing in Fairbury and Jefferson County. Suey was given the Rotary Golden Wheel award at a Rotary District ceremony October 14, 2023, in Omaha.“Our clubs are shining a light of recognition on people in our communities who, while not members of Rotary, nevertheless live by the motto ‘Service above Self,’” said Kathryn Schubert, Governor of the Rotary district which includes clubs in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa. “We feel it is one way to help foster the kind of communities that exemplify our desire to be people of action, working together to solve issues and address community needs.”Mick Suey, a teacher for 30 years, was honored by Fairbury Rotary for his commitment to this community, its history, its veterans and its children. As a board member for the Fairbury Museum Board for 15 years, Suey created the military room, helped Rotary in a tank painting and signage project, helped organize the annual car show, and was instrumental in creating a new Jefferson County Veterans Memorial. Rotary was one of many donors to the memorial, which was unveiled on Memorial weekend.The Rotary club said in a statement, “Fairbury Rotary appreciates the many ways Suey has given of himself to our community!”Each of the 38 Rotary clubs in the District hosted the Golden Wheel honoree selected by their members at a special dinner on October 14. The recognition was part of the focus on service in their communities which they highlight during their annual District Conference. The Rotary leaders also shared examples of the projects they’ve accomplished in their communities, in needy areas of the United States and even in remote parts of the world. Each year members of clubs in the District focus their efforts on one of Rotary’s causes which include promoting peace, fighting disease, helping mothers and children, supporting education and protecting the environment.“During my year as District Governor I saw the Golden Wheel recognition as a way that our members could shine the light of praise on someone doing good in their community,” said Barbara Bartle, District Governor in 2022-23. Bartle is a member of the oldest club in Nebraska, Rotary 14. The Golden Wheel recognition has become an annual celebration for clubs across the district.
