Ruining It For Everyone

Didja ever get the feeling there are people in this world whose only motivation is to bring down everyone else? I am by no means a conspiracy theorist. Yet, I cannot help but think there is a cabal of killjoys who spend all their time seething and fuming at every little thing that brings even a momentary respite of pleasure to people, and plot just how they can ruin it for everyone.Do you think that is hyperbole? Well, lemme give you the latest from the Bringdown Brigade.My job keeps me pretty busy. I do a lot of running around, attending meetings and snapping pictures of parades and fires and various other ‘newsworthy’ events. And then, of course, there are the deadlines. Everything I do has to be done and it has to be done NOW.So, on the rare occasion that I don't have to be somewhere, doing something or writing something, I like to take advantage by doing nothing. Nothing at all, including standing up.That is an overlong way of saying that, sometimes, I like to just stay in bed.I don't think I am unique. Indeed, one of the great joys in life is just laying in bed, bundled up in a nice, warm comforter, reading or watching TV or perhaps just listening to a rainfall tapping on a window or the droning of a fan during the warmth of a summer Sunday morning.This is not new. Laying in bed, no longer sleeping but not yet ready to get up and face the horrors of another day, has been a thing pretty much since the bed was invented. In Europe, you can see primitive cave paintings, thousands of years old, depicting a caveman with the covers pulled up over his head, moaning, “Just five more minutes.”Despite being around forever, some people have only recently discovered this phenomenon and given it a name:“Bed rotting.”Seriously, that is what they are calling it. The opinion of whomever came up with that name is pretty clear, donja think?There are now articles all over the web, asking the question, “Is bed rotting healthy?” It has the word, “rotting,” in it.How is anyone supposed to think such behavior is healthy?A doctor interviewed on Today.com, the website for the TV show of the same name, opined, “For somebody who is depressed, bed rotting sounds like a way of potentially withdrawing from others, not having social connections.”I don't stay in bed and avoid people because I am depressed. I do it because people are annoying. So, staying in bed actually prevents depression.I remember when staying is bed was a reward. Once a year we thanked our moms for being moms by giving them breakfast in bed and assuming she would clean up the piles of dishes we left in the kitchen sink later in the day. Now, apparently, it is a disorder.I can't help but remember a bit Drew Carey used to do in the early days of his stand-up career. He described getting ready to take a bite of a great, big cheeseburger when some guy sitting next to him said, “You know, that stuff'll kill ya, right?”“What!” Carey exclaimed. “That goodness you stopped me before I experienced a moment of joy.”What is really galling is that this only became a concern when it started happening on TikTok. Generation Z (who, apparently, thinks they invented everything) has made this a trend, evidently unaware of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's ‘bed-in,’ protesting the Vietnam War in 1969 by staying in bed.
