Sasse Receives Vote of No Confidence at U of F

By Gordon HopkinsIt is not just students that are unhappy with the selection of U.S. Senator Ben Sasse as the new president of the University of Florida (UF). Thursday afternoon, October 27, 2022, the school’s Faculty Senate held a vote of No Confidence in the selection process that led to Senator Sasse as the sole candidate for president. This vote comes just over a week after the Student Senate voted on October 18 to condemn the search process. The resolution states, in part, “The Faculty Senate of the University of Florida endeavors to work with the Board of Trustees to ensure the proper succession of the Presidency of the University. In doing so, the Senate must consider the well-being of all students, faculty, and staff in addition to the numerous intensive responsibilities that come with being an effective President of an R1 research institution. The next President should come already equipped to lead an institution of this caliber rather than aiming to learn on the job. Anything less will result in a lack of faith in leadership. The process of the thirteenth Presidential search, conducted in accordance with the updated Florida State Bill 520, has undermined the trust and confidence of the University of Florida Faculty Senate in the selection of the sole finalist Dr. Ben Sasse.” In March of this year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed bill 520, which exempted the names of applicants for the presidencies of Florida public universities and colleges from disclosure under public record laws.As of press time, Sasse had not yet commented on this latest development.
