Senate Republicans Block Bump Stock Ban

By Gordon Hopkins U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) is touting his role in blocking a bill to ban bump stocks in the U.S. Senate. The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) describes bump stocks as, “devices that allow a semiautomatic firearm to shoot more than one shot with a single pull of the trigger by harnessing the recoil energy of the semiautomatic firearm to which it is affixed so that the trigger resets and continues firing without additional physical manipulation of the trigger by the shooter.”On February 20, 2018, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum instructing the Attorney General “to dedicate all available resources to… propose for notice and comment a rule banning all devices that turn legal weapons into machineguns.” In response to that direction, the definition of “machinegun” was amended to ban all bump-stock-type devices. On Friday, June 14, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down that ban and, in response, the BUMP Act was introduced in the Senate. On Tuesday, the Senate debated the bill. Senator Martin Heinrich D-NM) sought bipartisan support for the bill, “As a firearms owner myself, there’s no legitimate use for a bump stock – not for self defense, not in a law enforcement context, not even in military applications … but what they are tailor made for is a mass shooting.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also supported the ban, calling it a “commonsense safety measure.” Ricketts disagreed, “He claims this bill will ban bump stocks. But just like his previously misnamed bills, if you actually read the bill, that’s not what it does!” “This bill is about banning as many firearms accessories as possible and giving ATF broad authority to ban most semiautomatic firearms,” Ricketts continued. “It’s an unconstitutional attack on law-abiding gun owners.”
