Senators Campaign in Fairbury

With one week before election day, two Republican U.S. Senators came to Fairbury to make their case for re-election. Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts appeared at On the Bricks Venue downtown Tuesday night, October 30. It was not a coordinated effort for both Senators to appear the same night but just a coincidence according to Senator Fischer, who said of Ricketts, “I guess it’s serendipity that we were both here today. It’s great to see him. He’s a great partner.”Fischer was scheduled to speak at 4:00 p.m. and Ricketts at 5:00 p.m. Both were introduced by Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock, who noted that Fischer was instrumental in obtaining the grant funding needed to complete a long-delayed road project.“And if you don't know this, but we got $8.5 million of funding to finally complete our PWF Road here in the eastern part of the county,” said Schoenrock. “I was telling Senator Fischer that's going to put that project within the realm of reality for us as a county board.”Schoenrock took Fischer to see the PWF Road earlier that day. Both senators discussed topics familiar to anyone who has been following the election campaigns, including immigration, border security, election security, the conflict in the Middle East and inflation.That same day, both senators also announced a $5.4 million grant that will be used to rehab the rail line between Fairmont and Burress in nearby Fillmore County. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen posted online, “I was pleased to provide a letter of support in March for the grant funding to enable this project. This line connects to agricultural product storage and transshipment facilities supporting over 100 local farms. This is an important investment for rural Nebraska.” Deb Fischer has been a senator since 2013. Prior to that, she was a member of the Nebraska Legislature from the 43rd district. Her opponent is Independent candidate Dan Osborn. Pete Ricketts previously served as governor of Nebraska from 2015 to 2023. On January 8, 2023, Ricketts was appointed to the Senate by Governor Pillen to replace U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, who resigned to take a job as president of the University of Florida. Ricketts is opposed by Democrat Preston Love, Jr.
