Sheriff To Increase Monitoring Of Dangerous Dogs In Fairbury

By Gordon HopkinsThe City of Fairbury and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will increase monitoring of dogs deemed dangerous. Sheriff Nick Georgi met with members of the Law Enforcement Committee on Tuesday, November 25. One of the matters discussed was dangerous dogs. The sheriff indicated he and Fairbury Code Enforcement Officer Dan Lufkin will be checking on dogs that are considered dangerous in the city to ensure owners are following all regulations, “There’s certain requirements that they got to follow. So, we’re going to start going out together, every couple of months or something, and just make sure they’re abiding by it that way, in case something ever does come up.”Among those requirements, the sheriff said, “If a dog is dangerous, state statute, they have to be spayed or neutered, they have to be microchipped. They cannot be outside unattended.”The sheriff’s office maintains a list of dogs considered to be dangerous. Sheriff Georgi said, “We have four of them in town that are still alive, that are on the dangerous dogs list.” Dogs can be considered dangerous or potentially dangerous. The sheriff explained the difference between the categories, “So, if a dog’s potentially dangerous, they’ve unprovokingly attacked someone or bit someone that didn’t cause medical attention, they could be potentially dangerous. And then if that happens again, even where they don’t injure someone, if they’re already potential they go to dangerous.”In September of this year, a dog attack in Fairbury that left three people injured, including a seven-year-old child, leading to an uproar on social media over dogs running loose in the city. This comes after another dog attack in 2024, which led to a $25,000 tort claim being filed against the City of Fairbury earlier this year. That tort claim is still pending. Complaints about dogs running loose or not under proper control in Fairbury have long been a topic for Fairbury citizens on Facebook and this recent incident has raised a lot of anger online.Fairbury Mayor Kelly Davis told FJN after the September incident, “I have told the Code Enforcement to crack down on loose dogs. They have ordered some equipment to help them catch the dogs. But catching more dogs creates another problem, which is where to house them. We will look into a bigger pound, but that comes with more problems. Most of the area where the existing pound is in the flood plain.”
