Shoplifting Suspect Gets Time Served

Cottonwood Hospice will hold a Holiday Grief Support Group Oct. 18-Dec. 27 at JCH&L Fairbury Clinic Conference room, 2200 H St.Sessions will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. every other Tuesday starting Oct. 18. Sessions are set for Oct. 18, Nov. 1, Nov. 15, Nov. 29, Dec. 13 and Dec. 27.There is no cost, and the sessions are open to anyone who has lost a loved one in the past year.Pre-registration is requested for planning purposes. Please call Cottonwood Hospice at 402-228-8501. Nathan C. Hansen, age 37, of Cheney, was sentenced to time served for shoplifting in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Hansen was accused of shoplifting from the Fairbury Walmart a value of less than $500, which makes the charge a class 2 misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.According to County Attorney Joseph Casson, the total value of the items taken was $109. All were returned in saleable condition.The offense occurred on November 19, 2021. The defendant signed a citation promising to appear in court. He was scheduled to be arraigned on December 22, 2022, but failed to appear.A warrant was issued for Hansen’s arrest. He was arrested on February 23, 2022. The next day, he was released from custody on a PR (Personal Recognizance) bond.Another court hearing was scheduled for March 16 but, again, Hansen failed to appear.Another warrant was issued and Hansen was arrested on September 12, 2022. He was later released on a $2,500 (10 percent) bond.The defendant had previously pleaded Not Guilty but changed his plea to No Contest. There was no plea agreement and Hansen waived his right to an attorney.“You’ve been arrested a couple of times,” Judge Bauer told the defendant.Hansen was sentenced to two days in jail, with credit for two days time served.
