Six-Hour Standoff in Daykin Ends with Arrest

A night-time standoff with an armed suspect in Daykin ended peacefully after six hours, with an arrest and no one hurt.Christopher D. Drees, 51, of Daykin, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Drees was arraigned on charges of using a firearm to commit a felony, a class 1C felony, punishable by a minimum of five years and a maximum of 50 years in prison; terroristic threats, a class 3A felony, punishable by three years in prison, nine to 18 months of post-release supervision, and a $10,000 fine; and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a class 1D felony, punishable by three to 50 years in prison.Drees has prior felony convictions and, as such, is not allowed to possess a firearm.At approximately 10:39 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, on Highway 4, near Daykin. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, “911 dispatchers received information that there was an extremely intoxicated male subject at the residence creating a disturbance and he discharged a firearm off outside of the residence making the other occupants fear for their life.”As deputies made their way to the scene, the 911 Center obtained information that all occupants of the residence were able to leave the property and the male subject was the only person left inside the residence.Deputies arrived at approximately 10:47 p.m. and were able to make visual contact of the suspect inside the residence through a window. It was unknown at the time if the subject was still in possession of the firearm but the Sheriff’s Office indicated, “(I)t was reported that there were numerous other firearms inside the residence.”The subject was identified as Drees. According to the Sheriff’s Office, “Deputies observed Drees in the residence to be very distraught and irritated.”Deputies attempted to make contact with Drees for several hours by telephone and a loud speaker system. Drees failed to cooperate and refused to exit the residence. After many failed attempts to get Drees to exit the residence, the Nebraska State Patrol was contacted to assist with the situation. Due to the potential of Drees still being armed and the other firearms located within the residence, the Nebraska State Patrol Tactical Response Team responded along with the State Patrol’s negotiating team.Drees remained inside of the residence for approximately six hours before entry was made into the residence. Drees was taken into custody at approximately 4:51 a.m., November 2.Later that same day, in court, Drees told Judge Bauer, “I don’t know anything about this.”Drees added, “I don’t know what happened.”When asked if he wanted an attorney, the defendant did not request court-appointed counsel but instead said, “I guess I’ll try to hire one.”County Attorney Joseph Casson asked for a bond of $250,000 (10 percent) be set. Judge Bauer said she took into account “the nature and circumstances of the offense” as well as the defendant’s prior criminal history when she set bond at $500,000.Drees was then transported to the Nebraska Diagnostic and Evaluation Center of the Department of Corrections in Lincoln.District Court CaseDrees was out on bond for a separate Jefferson County District Court case when this incident occurred.In this case, Drees is charged with third degree domestic assault. He has a prior assault conviction, which makes this a class 3A felony, punishable by up to three years in prison, 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine. Dress is also charged with attempts of a class 3 or 3A felony, which is a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison; and resisting arrest, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.On May 22 of this year, at approximately 2:42 a.m., Jefferson County Deputies responded to a report of an assault. According to the Arrest Affidavit, “Drees was very intoxicated.”Drees was arrested at the scene. He is represented in the District Court case by attorney Benjamin Murray.Drees was scheduled to appear in District Court on Thursday, November 3 but the case was continued.Prior Criminal RecordDrees has a prior criminal record, including a DUI (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol) conviction in 2013.The defendant was previously convicted of domestic assault, along with possession of dextroamphetamine, on June 13, 2019.On July 14, 2021, Drees was convicted of domestic assault in Jefferson County. He was originally charged with obstructing a peace officer and third-degree domestic assault. In accordance with a plea agreement, the obstruction charge was dismissed and Drees pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of domestic assault.
