Social Media Threat to Schools Not Considered Credible

By Gordon HopkinsA threatening social media post that put a number of Nebraska schools districts on alert has turned out to be a warning more than a week old from Georgia. In an email to parents sent yesterday by Fairbury Public Schools Superintendent Devin Embray, “Earlier today we were notified that a post on social media was circulating indicating that our school buildings were being targeted for a shooting. The post is actually a screenshot from the Georgia Department of Education indicating Targeted Assistance (academic) for Title One Schools in their State. In Georgia there is a school district by the name of Jefferson County. There is no threat to our schools and we are actively investigating the situation and students who posted it. Again, there is no threat to our school buildings and we are not being 'targeted' for a shooting.” FJN spoke with Jay Martin, School Safety & Security Director for the Nebraska Department of Education, who said, “There's reports of, basically, some different things recirculating that are, again, fabrications, and they've been going around, basically, since the Georgia shooting.”Four people were killed and nine others were hospitalized in shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. However, Nebraska schools have been on alert since a shooting at Omaha Northwest High School on Tuesday, September 10, and an alleged threat directed at Columbus Middle School on Wednesday.Martin noted the problem is not just in Nebraska, “Because the metro area just had their situation, we've been inundated in the state, but it's actually going across the United States right now.”Martin said, “It happens and we're going to have to deal with the aftermath of it.”
