It’s not Over till the last OutSome teams had a hot start that carried throughout the season. Some had a mixed bag of good and bad. While some had a rough go throughout it’s entirety, but the signs of good things came in flashes.Often times you’ll hear a coach say that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters. A team could go undefeated for regular season and lose one game in the post season finishing all the work that had been done.For the Fairbury Lady Jeffs, the softball season had plenty of downs, but more ups that would meet the eye, and the eyes of doubters would see that whether it be baseball or softball. The game and at times the season is never over until that final out. That would be very true with the Class C-6 Sub Districts as Fairbury would put all the lessons learned from the regular season into an incredible two-game stretch on Monday, October 2nd.In their first round match Fairbury was up against Centennial. During the regular season the Lady Jeffs had battled Centennial to close endings, but were 0-2 against their first round opponent. The third meeting was the charm for Fairbury with a hot start pushing them on to a 12-7 victory.Fairbury would rush their opponents with five runs coming across in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fourth and in the sixth while they put the nail in the coffin with three runs in the seventh inning.A big contribution to the runs scored came by Logan Wentz and Addy Marschman as each would come away with a home-run and multiple RBI. The bats seemingly coming alive at the right time for Fairbury pushed them pass their opponents as they would then take on Pierce.Fairbury had been tested and would have an uphill battle as they trailed by as many four runs at one point in the game, but rallied into a remarkable comeback victory with a final score reaching 21-16 to claim the Class C-6 Sub-District championship.From a team total of 17 hits, seven of those hits were doubles. Those coming from Madi and Izzie Ohlde, Malayne DeBoer, Lauren Wanamaker, Logan Wentz and Lexi Mau. Madi Ohlde’s second hit was a big one as she was able to hit a home-run as well as she tied for leading the team with three RBI.Now as Class C-6 Sub-District champions, Fairbury would press on as they will be up against St. Cecilia, a game where Fairbury as the #16 seed plays the part of underdogs against the #1 seed St. Cecilia on Friday, October 6th.As a team Fairbury comes in with a (0.254) batting average and a total of 148 runs scored from the season. With 159 hits, 35 were doubles, five triples, and five long balls with 109 RBI.As a team 85 walks had been drawn, Fairbury comes in with a (0.356) on base percentage and 27 bases stolen.The game is scheduled for noon as Fairbury will look to punch their ticket to State Softball with that game being covered in the Wednesday print edition.
