Speeding and Reckless Driving Fines Increase Next Week

Beginning Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Nebraska drivers will face stiffer penalties for speeding and reckless driving. There are also penalties for extreme speeding violations.
The changes are the result of passage of LB (Legislative Bill) 530,
The new fine structure is as follows:

  • 1–5 mph (miles per hour) over: $50 + court costs
  • 6–10 mph over: $75 + court costs
  • 11–15 mph over: $125 + court costs
  • 6–20 mph over: $200 + court costs
  • 21–35 mph over: $300 + court costs
  • 36+ mph over: $400 + court costs
It is important to note that driving double the posted speed limit or more will now be classified as reckless driving.
Work zones begin at the first sign and end only when signage indicates. If workers are present anywhere inside the zone, fines can be doubled.
Fines do not go to the police department. In Nebraska, money collected from traffic tickets primarily goes toward the support of public education in the local jurisdiction where the violation occurred.
