Spring Creek Model Trains Free-Mo Event

Once again, model trains filled the Thayer County Activity Center (TCAC) in Deshler this past weekend as Spring Creek Model Trains hosted the annual Free-mo Event. This year’s event brought modelers from New Jersey, Delaware, Minnesota, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and from right here in Nebraska sharing their modules and interest for the hobby. For some this was the first time they had made the journey to Deshler, NE and Spring Creek Model Trains. Others have been able to visit before, either for an event or just to stop in the store located in downtown Deshler to shop and talk trains.Free-mo events like this one, gives a model railroad enthusiast an opportunity to bring their personal modules and “link” them with others to create a unique and large layout to operate trains. Depending on who is able to participate in such an event and which modules they may bring along with them, will determine how the final plan for the entire layout will come together. As in past years, there was no admission fee for the event and the public was invited to come watch the trains and take in the scenery on the modules.Due to the space available at TCAC, there were 2 different scale layouts: HO and N scales. An HO scale is 1:87, while N scale is 1:160. Meaning, that one inch on the model would represent 87 or 160 actual inches respectively. Not only do the model trains follow that scale, but details found on the layouts, such as the buildings, bridges, people, and vehicles, would also follow the scale. Many of the details seen at this year’s event were very creative, precise and entertaining.“We do this event to give back to the model train community, while getting to share the hobby with our local communities” said David Zucker, owner of Spring Creek Model Trains. “Even though I didn’t get to run a train on the layout, I had a blast visiting with everyone. It was a fun weekend.”Spring Creek model Trains will continue to host events like this one and their biennial Model Train Show, which is scheduled to occur again in the summer of 2023. When asked about future Free-mo events in Deshler, one modeler excitedly said “I’m free next weekend!”
