Steele City Accepts Bid For Water Project

By Gordon HopkinsA bid for new water mains in Steele City was been accepted by the village board at a meeting Tuesday evening, July 8, 2025. The low bid was made by Pollman, LLC, of Fairbury, for $1,070,540.63, which is based upon the total of the unit bid prices and was 11 percent below the estimate. A water mains project was first begun five years ago but those mains have never been put into full time use due to leaks. This project is intended to replace those pipes. The previous project was made of three-inch pipe. The replacement project will four-inch PVC pipe. The mains will consist of approximately five-and-a-half miles of pipe, or 28,000 feet. Dana Peterson of Frontwater Engineering spoke at the meeting. He indicated work on the project could begin as soon as August of this year, with completion anticipated in approximately four months. The Village Board awarded the project to Pollman, LLC, contingent upon the approval from the state funding source. Peterson also talked about funding for the project, “So, as you know, you have EPA (Environmental protection Agency) money for this project. There’s no cost for the village for any of this.”At a previous meeting, Peterson indicated there was $1.21 million in funding for the entire project, including permitting, engineering, state fees and construction. However, Peterson acknowledges there is always the possibility of unanticipated expenses that could end up being owed by the village, “It’s capped at a certain amount, dollar amount.” Peterson said, “We’re kind of right in that nip-and-tuck area where we may be over. We may not, of course. I mean, in five-and-a-half miles, there’s a lot of potential unknowns that might come up that may cost more.”
