Thayer Central Hosts Wilber-Clatonia For Dual Between Two Strong Teams

Nearly one month away from state wrestling taking place and in the mean time two teams with many wrestlers favored to be competing in Omaha clashed in a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 5 which was a great mid-season test to refocus, and reignite the competitive edge between the hosting Thayer Central Titans and the visiting Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines.In the season thus far for Thayer Central returning five state competitors, two of which were medalist, the Titans have looked dominating with top finishes at tournaments and have been undefeated in dual competition. Those five returning state competitors consist of Gunner Mumford, Triston Wells, Cameron Schulte, Colter Sinn and Nate Burd each of whom that have surpassed double digit wins.For the two returning medalist with Gunner Mumford, last year getting second place in the 160-pound division and this year has him looking more than ready as the record shows he’s been able to reach double digits twice as he’s the last remaining Titan to be undefeated at 20-0. The other medalist was Triston Wells, who in the previous year came away with third in the 113-pound division and surpassed the 100-career win milestone just last month with no signs of slowing down.On the flip side for W-C, the Wolverines are only returning one state competitor with that being sophomore Iverson Mejia. Mejia is among two with the other being freshman Zaiyahn Ornelas to still be undefeated as Mejia has a record of 20-0 and Ornelas stands at 19-0.Not alone in reaching the double digits in wins twice as Mejia has been joined in that endeavor by Logan Zimmerman who has posted a 20-3 record so far in the season.With each team confident in their strengths and ability to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, this dual gave each wrestler a challenge that each had welcomed with open arms in what was an entertaining night of competition. By the time the dust had settled, Wilber-Clatonia had fought for a tremendous victory 40-30 handing Thayer Central’s first dual loss in the year. From the first three weights W-C was able to secure the wins, Isaac Tores 106, staying undefeated on the season Zaiyahn Ornelas at 113-pound, and Grant Eschiti at 120-pounds.Triston Wells secured the first win for Thayer Central at 126-pounds, but from 132-pounds to 160-pounds W-C was able as Ryan Marsh (132-pounds), Iverson Mejia (138-pounds), Jordan Marsh (145-pounds), and Zander Baker at 152-pounds each won by decision. Then at 170-pounds Gunner Mumford halted the momentum with a quick pinfall victory keeping his undefeated streak alive as well, Cameron Schulte at 182-pounds was able to have a quick victory as well as momentum was turning around for the Titans, and Cole Vorderstrasse was able to secure a pin fall in the third period in a battle at 195-pounds with three straight wins the Titans felt a comeback was possible. At 220-pounds in what was the match of the night came between Thayer Central James Bonar and Wilber-Clatonia Allen Odvody. It required overtime and exemplified why anyone is a fan of the sport of wrestling as Bonar was able to roll out of a predicament to secure a pin fall for himself making the score 30-36 as the crowd was standing for both competitors by the matches end for the effort that was on display.With one weight class left at 285-pounds Keith Kvasnicka of Wilber-Clatonia snuffed out any hopes for securing the victory in what was a great dueling bout.
