Thayer Central Moves To 5-0

Thayer Central had already matched their wins from last season coming into the game against Southern as the Titans were 4-0.A run heavy team with two running backs in the top 20 in 6/8/9 man football as senior Jordan Mariska sits at tenth in the state averaging 167.8 yards a game along with sophomore Sam Souerdyke coming at 16th averaging 145 yards on the ground. On the flip-side Thayer Central’s defense just as strong with senior Gunner Mumford in the top ten at seventh with 66 tackles on the season and several more Titans who have proven to be an impact.The Southern Raiders were sitting at 1-3 have proven to find success in something Thayer Central does in seldom, which is the passing game.Senior Kale Maguire taking the helm of quarterback does a bit of both running and passing for the Raiders and when looking down the field he’d be looking for his favorite target in senior Evan Saathoff who averages 8.3 yards a reception.After the clock had run out, the final score would be a Thayer Central Titans 36-6 victory against the Southern Raiders.Despite the loss the Raiders have many reasons to look at this game with approval as they would thwart six conversion attempts on the night, and held Thayer Central to a season low of rushing yards in a game as a team with 244.The scoreboard may have read one thing, but Southern’s effort was there from start to finish with notable performances from senior Kale Maguire connecting on nine passes on 14 attempts for 30 yards, one interception, and sophomore Cooper Warford throwing one pass that went for a seven yard touchdown reception. Leading in the receptions was senior Evan Saathoff and junior Lyndon Salts each getting three a piece as Saathoff led the team with 17 yards and Salts getting 11 yards and having the one receiving touchdown.On the ground Maguire led the team with 24 rushing yards on six carries. Southern will have plenty to build off from this week and take to the road going against Freeman on Friday, September 30.For Thayer Central, a methodical run game that kept things business as usual for the Titans. Junior Will Heitmann with one pass going for 37 yards with senior Grant Wiedel on the receiving end of the touchdown pass. On the ground, the first time in the season Thayer Central was met with some resistance, but as they averaged 5.4 yards a carry as a team, it wasn’t too far off.Being led by senior Jordan Mariska getting 17 carries for 113 yards with two rushing touchdowns, and sophomore Sam Souerdyke with 19 carries with 95 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Defensively senior Duncan Wiedel and junior Jayden Hissong were able to grab one sack in the game. Duncan was among two other Titans who grabbed six tackles in total with the others being Gunner Mumford and Cameron Schulte.Grant Wiedel with one reception on offense with that pass intended for him, his other catch of the game was not as Wiedel showed how bad he wanted it and had to leap for it on the sideline to come down with one interception for the defense as well.Thayer Central now at 5-0 has tied last seasons win total and looks to push on as they’ll be back home for Exeter-Milligan/Friend on Friday, September 30.
