The Season is Upon Us

By Don Shearon First Published November 20, 1970 Activity preparatory to putting Fairbury’s Christmas lights in place was noticed downtown this week and the sight brought us up short.With the mercury flirting with the 60-degree level, and a top-coat just so much excess baggage, it was difficult to realize we are approaching year’s end.Just as the print keeps getting smaller, the steps steeper, and the hills more nearly vertical, it seems that time has a habit of rolling along at a brisker pace each year.Some will say we are rushing the season to install Christmas lights before Thanksgiving is behind us, and perhaps we are, just a bit. It was suggested by a coffee counter companion that Santa’s house be left in place permanently, and as soon as the Fourth of July fireworks supply runs out, haul out the Christmas trinkets and restock the shelves.Since we have seen the last Veterans Day to fall on November 11—pursuant to federal law—this might not be too bad an idea, for one never knows what cute notion the Big Brothers in Washington will come up with next.We seem to recall, in the distant past„ that Pres. Franklin Roosevelt once tried to move Thanksgiving because he thought it was too Sear Christmas. He didn't make that one stick. Most Americans in time became accustomed to FDR's operating style, and probably would have expressed only mild surprise if he had attempted to transfer Easter because he thought It was too close to Sunday.But can Christmas be scarcely a month away?Tempus sure does Fugit!Gridiron News of a Different SortVery nearly lost in the profusion of verbiage about the Cornhuskers upcoming journey to the Orange Bowl was a news item of quite a different sort but still involving University of Nebraska football.This item appeared on an inside page, tucked away in an inconspicuous corner, but we feel it deserves more generous display.It told of NU Chancellor Durward Varney's comments during the dedication of a new high school building at Millard, when he reportedly said of the Nebraska football players, “They have performed superbly as a football team, but even more satisfying is the manner in which they have conducted themselves as representatives of the university, of the state and of this section of the country…I take a deep sense of satisfaction in the quality of men on the team. They are intelligent, and well mannered. They dress well and look well. You would be proud of them.”A strikingly similar thought occurred to us when we attended the annual father-son football recognition banquet hosted by the Fairbury Elks lodge, and before we had seen the Varney quotation.Without exception, when high school's Gridiron Greats stepped forward, one by one, to accept the certificates provided by the Fairbury Elks, they made a splendid impression. Each and every one presented a neat appearance, eyes sparkling in anticipation.They are the kinds of kids of whom Fairbury can be proud; every Fairburian, not just their parents.They represent still another example of the wholesomeness we enjoy here in Our Town. And they belie the scare-headlines about that tiny minority of youngsters to be doing their darnedest to tar a whole generation.
