Threat Against Thayer Central Results in Felony Charge

By Gordon HopkinsAn alleged threat that kept Thayer Central School closed for three days earlier this year has resulted in a felony charge against a juvenile. The alleged threat was a message on Instagram on January 27, 2023, in which the poster claimed to have been bullied and expressed a desire to “shot up the school till I got my satisfaction.”Thayer Central School was closed Monday, January 30 and the following two days. The school and law enforcement issued a joint statement at the time, “Thayer Central Administration was notified of a threat made towards the school on the afternoon of Friday, January 27th. Upon being made aware of the threat, Thayer Central Administration contacted Thayer County Law Enforcement to assist in investigating the threat.” Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol Tech Crimes Unit, along with Thayer County Law Enforcement, identified a suspect. The State Patrol indicated the suspect was located in New Mexico. According to a statement released by school administration, “The source of the posting of the threat has been identified by Law Enforcement. The source has been determined to be out of state and not credible and in no way currently affiliated with Thayer Central Community Schools.”School reopened on Thursday, February 2.At the time, Thayer County Attorney Joseph Casson said that, since the juvenile was living in New Mexico, any prosecution would be up to New Mexico authorities. However, since that time, the suspect has returned to Thayer County.The Thayer County Attorney has now filed a charge of terroristic threats, a class 3A felony.
