Three Big Wins

Congratulations to the three state champion wrestlers from the FJN coverage area.Thayer Central has had a long, storied history in high school wrestling and the Titans are a very well-coached, disciplined and hungry team. From what I have been told and observed, Triston Wells obviously has everything it takes to be a champion, from skill, speed, strength, and most importantly, the mental aspect and will it takes to win.Having lived in Wilber for many years, it is great to see coach Bates get a state champion. This guy lives and breathes high school wrestling and puts on one of the best camps out there. It was great to see Paul Havel, a W-C state champion in his own right, there to see another Wolverines bring home the gold.I have known the Schramm family since moving back to Fairbury. My oldest daughter, Adaline, is close friends with Gavin Schramm and seeing Makena develop as a person and wrestler has been awesome. A very respectful young lady, I have never seen any wrestler in my life with the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ like that young lady has when it comes to wrestling.Many years ago I was working for a major newspaper chain and went to state wrestling. There was a young man in my coverage area that had not lost in two years. He easily won his second state title and as soon as the ref smacked the mat for the pinfall, he ran into the stands…and grabbed a Snickers from his mom.I asked him about it later and he told me he had not had candy since he was like seven-years-old.From a very young age, his life was wrestling. He worked out, he had a specific diet, he trained, he went to camps, that was his life.His goal that night was to go to Baskin Robbins and eat all 31 flavors. He was retiring from the sport after that, despite offers from several colleges. He wanted to go out on a high note.The dedication these young men and women have to the sport is incredible and it is great to see these three bring home state titles to their respective schools and communities.And to all the wrestlers that made it to state, congrats and good luck next year. It is always special making it to state and those seniors should hold those memories dear to their hearts as a wonderful accomplishment.
