Three of Four New Jansen Village Board Members Sworn In Monday Night

By Gordon HopkinsThe Jansen Village Board of Trustees held its first meeting since the election of four new board members.Kristina Riggle, Jefferson County Election Commissioner, confirmed the results of the election are now official.The four new board members are Vern Niemand, whose term will expire in 2026; and Carol Ellis, Tony Eyer and Jared Russell, whose terms will expire in 2024.They replace Kesha Eldridge, Joyce Ambrose, Matthew Leatherwood and Stoney Brooks, all of whom resigned in May of this year.A total of 47 ballots were cast. The final results are:Jansen Board Member VF1 (Vote for 1):Susan Dickman – 15; Vern Niemand – 13Total Votes Cast – 45Jansen Board Member VF3 (Vote for 3):Carol Ellis – 43; Jared Russell – 24; Chris Ackman – 19; Tony Eyer – 43; Write-in Votes – 1Total Votes Cast – 128The board consists of five seats. Janene Russell is the sole board member remaining after the recent resignations. With only a single trustee, the village board did not have a quorum and, as such, has been unable to hold board meetings or conduct any village business until the election was held.The first order of business was the swearing in three of the four new board members. One new member, Niemand, was out of town and will have to be swear in at the next meeting, scheduled for August 14.Niemand’s absence complicated the next item of business, electing a chairperson. The board voted twice by secret ballot and each time was a tie, two voted for Janene Russell and two for Carol Ellis. It was decided to table a third vote until the next meeting.
