Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

Gerald Ackerman, age 66, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. His attorney, Public Defender Scott Ghropp, advised the court that a plea agreement had been reached. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Ackerman was originally charged with possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony punishable by up to two years in prison, 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine. However, County Attorney Joseph Casson amended the charge to attempted possession, a class 1 misdemeanor that carries a possible penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000f fine.Ackerman is also charged with driving under a suspended license and driving without a valid registration, both class 3 misdemeanors; driving without proof of insurance, a class 2 misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction that carries a possible $100 fine.According to the Probable Cause Affidavit, the Nebraska State Patrol initiated a traffic stop of the defendant's vehicle after observing the vehicles has expired plates. A glass pipe was located in the defendant's pocket by law enforcement. The substance in the pipe field tested positive for methamphetamine.In accordance with the plea agreement, Ackerman pleaded guilty to attempted possession and driving under a suspended license. The remaining charges were dismissed.Judge Bauer ordered a PSI (Pre-Sentencing Investigation) and a substance abuse evaluation. Sentencing is scheduled for May 3.
