Traffic Stop Leads To Multiple Arrests

Dana L. Culp, 25, of Fairbury was arraigned in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, September 15. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.The defendant is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison, nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine, and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction that carries a $100 fine.Jefferson County Deputies were dispatched to an address in Fairbury on August 12 of this year at approximately 10:26 p.m. to respond to a report of a suspicious person. Deputies spotted a vehicle near the dog pound and initiated a traffic stop.There were five occupants of the vehicle. One was identified as Ronald John, who was arrested on an outstanding warrant.Deputies asked for, and were given, permission to search the vehicle. According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, Deputies, “located a small, antique-looking Coca-Cola tin that contained bits of a green leafy substance (suspected marijuana shake), a plastic bag with marijuana shake, and an empty cigarette box.”The Deputy who filled out the affidavit wrote, “I informed them that we had probable cause to search them.”Deputies searched Dana Culp's purse, “located a small gray padded pouch containing a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine which contained burnt, whitish-gray crystalline residue (suspected methamphetamine). Another glass pipe similar to the first was found loose in the bottom of the purse that contained burnt, whitish-gray crystalline residue (suspected methamphetamine), a torch lighter, and a small piece of baggie that appeared to have been tied shut at one point which, based on my training and experience, is consistent with baggies that used to package controlled substances.”A sample of the residue field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Dana Culp was placed under arrest at approximately 11:04 p.m.Culp also has a case pending in Gage County District Court. She was arrested on April 4 of this year and is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, each a class 4 felony.Culp is represented by attorney Lee Timan in the Gage County case. Instead of assigning the local Public Defender, Judge Bauer appointed Lee Timan to the Jefferson County case as well.The case was continued until October 20.
