Trojans March On To State

Tri County Trojans punched their ticket to the state basketball tournament with a victory on Tuesday, February 28 with the final score of 60-47 against Wakefield.In a game that showed the growth, poise and patience of each team from the regular season, it took the extra efforts to get the results desired.The first quarter had Tri County’s offense well on display with the good shot selection, but slow on the rotation and miscommunication on the defensive end kept their opponents in the game with the first quarter in favor of Tri County 16-12.Both teams made the adjustments needed in the second quarter, but that wasn’t to say each had mistakes made whether it was poor passing, or lack of rebounding, either way, the second quarter seemingly a stand off scoring Wakefield 11-10 but at half Tri County 26-23.The second half Wakefield was ready and firing away with the threes to keep them within reach. While their opponents shot from the outside, Tri County implemented a nice weave motion to set up the pick-in-roll that found great success the entirety of the second half as Tri County would push on in the third 12-10, and then finally in the fourth would run away with it after some solid rebounding and shooting at the charity stripe scoring 22-14 in the fourth to claim their right to fight at State basketball.An all around team performance was needed to win this battle and a trio of Trojans stood out with their efforts as senior Carter Siems nearly had a triple double for scoring 24 points, with 10 rebounds and dished seven assists, along with two steals and two blocks as he led the charge on both ends of the court.Along with senior Chris Janssen paying big dividends on the board and the charity stripe as he scored a sweet 16 points and had five rebounds while junior Cameron Reynolds scored 10 points, and had six rebounds for the Trojans. A great lift off the bench coming from Drew Siems dropping seven points, while getting his hands on one rebound as well and though the efforts put out defensively won’t be found on the stat sheet.The junior duo of Braiden Strouf, and Caden Bales switching on one of Wakefield’s best scorers played a huge factor in the opportunities that were created defensively that was rewarded offensively.Going into State, Tri County will be a number six seed with a record of 23-4 going against the number three seed Doniphan-Trumbull on Thursday, March 9 at 3:15 p.m. at the Devaney Center in Lincoln.
