Trojans Start Off Season With Win

On Thursday, Aug. 24 as it was the first night for the Fairbury Jeffs hosting the Tri County Trojans to kick off the 2023 football season.The Trojans did not waste anytime scoring 7-0 in the first quarter. Then T.C. scored 21 more points ending the half up 28-0.The second half much like the same, as Tri County would pour on more on the way to the victory with of a complete shutout, 48-0.For Tri County’s offense, a balanced attack with three touchdowns on the ground and two touchdowns coming from the air as the senior duo of Dusty Kapke completed four-of-eight attempts for 43 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while John Wehrman completed three-of-four passes for 57 yards with one touchdown.On the ground Tri County was led by senior Cael Washburn with 12 carries going for 90 yards with two touchdowns and was joined in the end-zone with Dusty Kapke having seven carries for 48 yards and one touchdown.Coming down with the passes was Pierce Damrow, Drew Siems and Cole Spahr. Siems and Damrow each had three receptions with Damrow having one touchdown along with Cole Spahr one catch being a 41 yard touchdown.Defensively Spahr put the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter as he ended the night with two interceptions with the second being returned for a 103 yard touchdown.Dusty Kapke was able to take one interception as well, and Cooper Stokebrand led the team with seven total tackles, two of which were for loss.Notable performances from Fairbury came by way of Jacob Nippert completing four-of-14 pass attempts for 83 yards, his longest pass going for 51 and had two interceptions and Dalton Vanlaningham had six carries good for 25 yards.Combing for 118 yards receiving was Nic Smith, Cj Goeking, Korey Nippert, and Tannor Neumiller. Smith and Neumiller each had three receptions, while Nippert and Goeking each had two.Defensively Neumiller and Jamison Runge each had one interception for the Jeffs.Tri County will look to carry this momentum into the next game as they will be back home, hosting Yutan on Friday, Sept. 1st. Fairbury looks to regroup on the road as they take on Falls City this Friday (Sept. 1). Wolverines Lose HeartbreakerWilber-Clatonia loses it late in home opener against St. Cecilia 14-20.A back and forth battle that had W-C holding on with the lead.The air raid of St. Cecilia proved to be too much as they racked up 243 yards with their biggest play being a 72 yard touchdown pass to take the lead in the fourth.Unfortunate results in the finish, but good signs offensively for W-C getting 170 yards on the ground with Cooper Palmer leading the Wolverines attack with 13 carries for 84 yards, but had one fumble.Carter Skelba had the most carries with 20 going for 64 yards and one rushing touchdown for W-C. Skelba would also throw 50 percent in completion going six for twelve for 90 yards and one touchdown thrown. On the receiving end of the pass was Ty Kuhlman as his one reception was a touchdown that went for 47 yards.Jack Zimmerman also contributed one catch going for 22 yards and Cooper Palmer had three receptions for 26 yards.On the defensive side Hugo Pomajzl had eight tackles, with one being a sack, and Jorge Vazquez had five tackles in total with two sacks in the process as well. Gage Heller had seven tackles, one being for a loss and also blocked a field goal attempt.W-C looks to bounce back with a win on the road as they’ll be going against Louisville on Friday, Sept. 1. Titans Have Solid Win Over McCool JunctionA strong first half leads the way for Thayer Central to grab a 28-14 victory at home against McCool Junction on Friday, Aug. 25.Leading the offensive charge was junior Sam Souerdyke with 16 carries that went for 148 yards and three rushing touchdowns, adding two catches for 37 yards with one receiving touchdown. Will Heitmann was able to complete two-of-eight pass attempts with one passing touchdown, and carried the ball eight times for 22 yards.For the Titans defense a trio stood out with each getting double digit tackles as junior Dylan Williams led the team with 15 total tackles, senior Nate Burd had a dozen tackles with one sack, one fumble recover as well as junior David Johnson had an even 10 tackles and one fumble recover for himself also.Thayer Central hits the road next week going against Sutton on Friday, Sept. 1. Eagles Fly Over RaidersSouthern Raiders unable to slow down Johnson-Brock Eagles losing 8-40 last week.Notable performances for the Raiders on the offensive side as the team racked up a total of 179 yards on the ground with senior Cysn Singleton having 10 carries for 57 yards, junior Austin March had four carries for 34 yards scoring the one rushing touchdown for the team.Senior Lyndon Salts had seven carries for 56 yards, junior Cooper Warford had 17 carries for 16 yards, and sophomore Carsen Goes with three carries went for 16 yards as well.Goes and Singleton each managed to lead the team with six tackles in total.Wymore will be looking to get in the win column as they host Diller-Odell Griffins next Friday, Sept. 1. Griffins Drop OpenerDiller-Odell Griffins can’t contain Osceola losing 8-54 on Friday, Aug. 25.D-O looks to round up from the loss as they’ll be on the road next week taking on the Southern Raiders Friday, Sept. 1.
