Two Face Drug Charges

Two suspects arrested in a drug bust earlier this week appeared in Jefferson County Court via webcam from the Jefferson County Jail on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.No charges were on file as of press time. However, both 27 year-old Alayna Montague and 22 year-old Aleece Montague were arrested for possession of THC wax (tetrahydrocannabinol- the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis).THC wax is a controlled substance and possession is a class 4 felony, punishable by up to two years in prison, 12 to 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine.Alayna Montague is facing additional charges, including possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony, and child abuse/neglect, a class 3a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison, nine to 18 months of post-release supervision.On Monday, January 9, 2023, deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a narcotics search warrant at a residence located in Fairbury. Deputies executed the search warrant at approximately 7:30 a.m.According to Sheriff Nick Georgi, upon entry, there was one adult and one minor child located within the residence. A press release indicates, “Numerous controlled substances were found within the residence to include: methamphetamine, marijuana, THC wax, and numerous paraphernalia items.”Arrested at the scene was Alayna Montague, who was transported to the Jefferson County Jail and booked.Later that morning, Aleece Montague was arrested in connection with the search warrant and also booked into the Jefferson County Jail.Bond for Aleece Montague was originally $7,500 (10 percent). The defendant said she was unable to pay that. County Attorney Joseph Casson said, “There could be some reduction but I would oppose a PR (Personal Recognizance) bond.”Judge Bauer agreed to lower the bond to $3,700 (10 percent).The defendant also requested court-appointed counsel and Public Defender Scott Gropp was appointed to represent her.Bond for Alayna Montague was originally set at $25,000 (10 percent). Again, Casson said he opposed a PR bond but felt some reduction was in order. Judge Bauer reduced the bond to $5,000 (10 percent).The defendant requested court-appointed counsel and Attorney Dillon O'Doherty was appointed to defend her.Alayna Montague does have a prior criminal history. On November 3, 2022, she was sentenced to 12 months of probation two counts of attempt of a class 4 felony (possession of a controlled substance), which is a class 1 misdemeanor. She was still on probation at the time of her most recent arrest.Arraignment for both defendants is scheduled for January 25, 2023.
