Unseasonably Warm Temps Bring Fire Risk

After the brutal snow storms of January, the people of Nebraska are enjoying an unseasonably warm February. However, there are risks associated with the change in weather, such as a high to very high fire danger.Warm temperatures, winds and sunshine have had the effect of drying out much of the local vegetation, turning it to what amounts to kindling. Under those circumstances, a fire can start easily and spread quickly.Wednesday afternoon, February 21, shortly before 1:30 p.m., the fire department was dispatched to the scene of a small grass fire at 13th and K Streets in Fairbury. The fire was extinguished almost immediately and scorched only a few square yards but it illustrates that such fires aren't exclusive to large fields outside the city limits.On Thursday, February 22, the Fairbury Rural Fire Department issued a statement, “At this point, we will continue to issue permits for land management burns, but we are continuing to monitor the weather conditions. If we feel conditions are not favorable, we will notify our dispatchers, and they will not allow the permit to be activated. This is the choice of the fire chief, not the dispatchers, so we ask for your cooperation if this happens when you are ready to burn. Also, this only applies to the Fairbury Rural Fire district, not the neighboring districts.”The fire department also recommend that if you have burned in the last few weeks, make sure you are checking those burn areas to ensure there are no areas that are still hot and could potentially cause rekindling of the fire.
