Used Oil Removed

By Gordon HopkinsAfter more than a year, 38 drums of used oil stored on Fairbury city property were removed last week by Sunbelt Solomon, a Kansas-based company that recycles and disposes of power-distribution equipment.The questions now is, what will happen to the oil? An analysis of the oil completed October 24, 2022, indicated the oil contains PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), highly carcinogenic chemical compounds formerly used in industrial and consumer products.PCB levels in the oil are 4.01 ppm (parts per million). EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) enforces the TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) program in Nebraska. Per EPA rules, used oil containing PCB’s over two ppm but under 50 ppm must be managed as an off-specification used oil.Sunbelt Solomon was recommended by the EPA as a company as a certified PCB disposal center. Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown said the oil would be recycled but could provide no details.FJN reached out to Sunbelt Solomon and asked how the used oil would be handled. A representative said they could not discuss what would happen to the oil without permission from the city.When asked if he would give permission to Sunbelt Solomon to discuss disposal of the oil, Mayor brown responded, “It is Sunbelt’s oil now, they plan on recycling it. That’s my only comment.”
