Vaccinations On The Rise In PHS District

According to Public Health Solutions (PHS), two more individuals in the district have died as a result of contracting the COVID-19 infection, as of Thursday, September 16, according to the data published by PHS.The PHS district covers Jefferson, Saline, Thayer, Gage and Fillmore Counties. It is unknown in which counties the deaths occurred, as current regulations forbid releasing data at a county-level for any county with a population of less than 20,000. PHS also notes that 207 confirmed positive cases have been reported in the last two weeks.VaccinationsThe PHS district is seeing an increase in vaccinations. Currently, approximately 24,746 individuals in the district, or 46.05 percent of the population, is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That is an increase over the previous week, which was 45.45 percent. The number is still less than the 54.1 percent statewide reported by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).In September, President Biden announced a plan to greatly expand vaccine requirements to include employers with 100 or more employees and health care settings that receive Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement, including but not limited to hospitals, dialysis facilities, ambulatory surgical settings, and home health agencies.Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts immediately pushed back on the idea of a vaccine mandate. On Sunday, September 19, the Governor Tweeted, “We are going to muster every tool in the toolbox to fight back against President @Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate.”IvermectinEarlier this month, the FDA issued a warning about ivermectin, “The FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for use in preventing or treating COVID-19 in humans or animals. Ivermectin is approved for human use to treat infections caused by some parasitic worms and head lice and skin conditions like rosacea.”The statement notes, “However, the FDA has received multiple reports of patients who have required medical attention, including hospitalization, after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for livestock.”The CDC and the American Medical Association (AMA) have also issued warnings. The AMA said, “Overdose of ivermectin can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension, allergic reactions, dizziness, ataxia, seizures, coma and even death.”Ivermectin is also used to treat parasitic infections in animals. However, the human and animal versions of ivermectin are very different. The FDA explained, “For one thing, animal drugs are often highly concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which weigh a lot more than we do—a ton or more. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans.”Despite the danger, at least one local veterinarian has told FJN that some individuals have “potentially” attempted to purchase ivermentin for human use. This has not been independently verified by FJN.
