Vandalism Happens In Fairbury Parks

Fairbury’s City Parks’ saw a couple of recent incidents of vandalism last week.A fire had been started in one of the public restrooms in McNish Park. On Friday, September 1, Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown posted on social media, “I am asking that if anyone knows or sees anything suspicious to please get a hold of the Sheriff’s Office ASAP. We together, as citizens of this town, cannot allow someone to destroy OUR public property. The city will be taking extra steps to try to identify this criminal if/when they decide to try something destructive again.”In another incident, the cement benches that are part of the recently unveiled Veterans Memorial in City Park were toppled and a lighting fixture damaged.The Fairbury City Museum was one of the driving forces behind the new memorial. Museum Curator Pa’Ren Sims recently wrote, “How many thousands of dollars do we have to pay to buy more security cameras, to get these criminals caught? I am heart sick. Being the curator of the Fairbury City Museum, I take my job to heart. All the work to make that memorial, make our museum a quiet place to come sit outside and have a lunch or just read a book, our parks for all to enjoy, just makes me heartsick to think there is not enough pride in our fair town for those to think they will get away with this?”Mick Suey of the Museum board indicated there are security cameras in the City Park and the video is being examined.
