Wayne Stewart

Wayne Glenn Stewart of Fairbury passed away on June 15th, 2024 at the age of 85. Wayne was born September 20th, 1938 to Glenn and Agnes (Sipek) Stewart on a farm outside of Daykin, Nebraska. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Fairbury. Wayne graduated from Fairbury High School in 1955 and was hired on to Rock Island Railroad a couple of months shy of his 18th Birthday. He worked for Rock Island until they ceased operations in 1980 starting out as a brakeman and ending as a conductor. After the railroad, heworked for the Fairbury Light and Water Department until his retirement. He married Katharyn Rohr August 6, 1961 at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairbury. To this union, two children were born, Tracy and Kim. Wayne and Kathy later divorced but remained friends. Wayne had a love for motorcycles. His first motorcycle was a red 1939 Harley Davidson FLH. He also had a 1951 Harley, and a 1958 Harley at one time. Wayne raced for three years from 1959 to 1961 on a factory-made Harley Davidson KR Racer, #15, making appearances inOmaha, Kinopolis, Kansas, Fairbury, and other places, going by the nickname “Stew”. He was also a member of the Throttle Twisters motorcycle club in Fairbury. In 1991, Wayne became a grandfather and met the apple of his eye, Jenna. They spent a lot of time together, and shared a very special bond. In later years, Wayne enjoyed attending auctions, going to dirt track races in Fairbury, Belleville and Stockton Kansas, and spending time with his family. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Agnes Stewart. Wayne is survived by Kathy, Son Tracy of Noel Missouri, Daughter Kim (Randy) Johnson of Fairbury, Granddaughter Jenna Hughes (Clayton) French, Great Grandchildren Shainley and Brody French of Freeport Florida. Brothers Robert Stewart of Endicott, and Norman Stewart ofFairbury. Services will be held on Monday, June 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury with internment immediately following at the Fairbury Cemetery. Please dress casual. In lieu of flowers, memorials will go to the family’s choice. There will be public viewing at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. www.gerdesmeyerfh.com
