Welsh Heritage Centre Wins Outstanding Award

One Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Centre of Wymore was there recipient of a Gage County Tourism awards for Outstanding Attraction. The Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project, located at 307 South 7th Street, is the only cultural resource in the United States dedicated to interpreting the cultural legacy of Welsh immigrants on the Great Plains. The Centre is an invaluable resource for genealogical or historical research, with the attached, climate-controlled archive, constructed in 2013, that contains an ever-increasing number of sources written or published in the Welsh language. The archive is the only repository of the Welsh-language newspaper, Y Drych, in microfilm format, with issues dating back to 1851. Gwenith Colgrove, President of the Welsh Heritage Centre, told FJN, “This is a result of us bringing the North American Festival of Wales to Nebraska for the first time in its nearly 100-year history. By hosting this annual event, we had people from 39 states, 6 Canadian provinces and over 20 visitors from Wales. Tours were held at the Homestead National Monument, Great Plains Welsh Heritage Museum, the historic one-room school located in McCandless Park and Bethel Cemetery south of Wymore. The headquarters of the festival was the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln where seminars, competitions featuring singing and original poems and featuring an in-person via Zoom with Lincoln native, Dick Cavett. From this national and international promotion, the Welsh museum is now in a fund raising campaign to enlarge the current building by 2,200 sq. ft.” Other winners of the Gage County Tourism awards are Colleen Schoenwise of Vintage Venue, Friend of Tourism award; Rhonda Brownawell, award for Outstanding Frontline Employee; and Holiday Lighted Parade, Outstanding Event award.
