West Nile Virus Found in Saline County

Public Health Solutions (PHS) reports that Saline County has its first positive West Nile Virus mosquito sample of the season. The sample, taken from mosquito trapping equipment, was collected at Tuxedo Park in Crete.West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance is performed each year in the Public Health Solutions district and positive “pools” of mosquitoes infected with WNV are not uncommon. Most people infected with WNV either don't develop signs or symptoms, or have minor ones, like fever and mild headache. However, some people develop a serious illness that includes inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). Some populations are more susceptible to WNV infection including elderly, disabled, and those with weakened immune systems.Prevention is the best defense against WNV infection.There are a few simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites. Use insect repellent. Choose an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent with DEET. Mosquito proof your home. Use screens on windows and doors and repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Empty standing water near your home. Once a week empty, turn over, or cover items that hold water such as bird baths, buckets, planters, tires, and trash containers.PHS has free mosquito dunks for the public. Mosquito Dunks are a larvicide used for long-term control of mosquito larvae.
