1943 Western Nebraska Friendship Quilt To Be Auctioned Off At Western’s 150th Celebration July 16, 2022.(To Be Auctioned In The Western Park Immediately Following The Parade)1943 WESTERN NEBRASKA FRIENDSHIP QUILTThese quilt blocks were made by ladies in the Women’s Guild of St. John’s Evangelical Church in Western, Nebraska. Minutes of their January 1943 meeting indicate that quilt blocks were to be made by the members to create a friendship quilt for Mrs. Ervin (Clara) Sellenrick Jahnke who was moving to Crete. The names were written in pencil and them embroidered. The 40’s era fabric prints were all hand sewn to opposite corners with difficult seams. The blue block in Row 4 by Mrs. J.F. Krajnik Sr. is made from a faded sugar sack labeled “Granulated Table & Preserve Sugar”. JoAnn (Drake) Roesler, daughter of Bud and Velma (Smith) Drake purchased the 22 blocks at an auction so they could be preserved. However, JoAnn passed away November 2020 before she could have them made into a quilt. Because of JoAnn’s love and dedication to the preservation of Western history, her sisters & brothers asked their cousin Maechelle (Oldfield) Clements to sew the blocks into a quilt & have it quilted.
