Westin Requests City Vacate A Portion Of Bacon Road

Westin Package Meats has requested that the City of Farbury vacate an additional portion of Bacon Road in Fairbury. A hearing was held on Tuesday, June 7, to discuss the proposed vacate at the Fairbury City Council meeting room. At the end of the hearing, the council approved the request.Prior to 2018, the city vacated H Street south of Bacon Road and several sections of the south right-of-way at 810 Bacon Road for the expansion of Westin Packaged Meats. Then, in December of 2021, the city vacated Bacon Road from the east side of H Street to the west side of I Street for Westin’s future expansion across the road to their facilities on the north side of Bacon Road.Westin is also proposing to expand to the west from the northwest corner of their existing building into the previously vacated H Street. There was still a small section of the right-of-way on the southside of Bacon Road in the intersection of H Street and Bacon Road that had not yet been vacated and Westin requested the city vacate that area as well. The approximate location of the requested vacate is in the south right-of-way of Bacon Road in the intersection of Bacon and H Street located adjacent to the vacated right of way of H Street, and adjacent to the north line of Lot 1, Block 43 McDowell’s Addition, all being in the southeast ¼ of Section 14 T2N R2E of the 6th P.M. City of Fairbury, Jefferson County Nebraska in the L-1, Light Industrial Zoning District.The previous vacates are adjacent to and located directly east and south of the latest proposed vacate. For that reason, the city felt this vacate request would not adversely impact the use of the Bacon and H Street intersection. In addition, the utilities have been modified at this location so that the expansion will not impact them. Currently the electric transmission proposes to remain directly north of the building as it does now.According to Laura Bedlan, Development Services Director, the city will reserve the right to maintain, operate, repair and renew existing utilities.Westin Packaged Meats is currently planning a $10 million expansion project, which will include 13,000 square feet of additional space built on the west end and will expand the company’s Ready to Eat room.Traditionally, the approval of such an ordinance would require three readings. However, the council has the option to waive the three readings, which they agreed to do. The council voted unanimously to vacate that portion of Bacon Road.
